Luhya
A 1996 painting of Tongolo Akani Mutsotso, with one of his five wives.He inherited seven widows. He and his wives are from the Isukha, a sub-community of the larger community of the Luhya who hail from Khayeka in Kakamega region.
Tongolo was once a member of the colonial home guard. He is also a medicine man and lives at the edge of Kakamega forest.
The couple wear a traditional dress made of white fabric wrapped around the body.
There is n impression of the ‘weeping stone’ in the background. The stone is a national heritage site and is of cultural and spiritual importance to the Luhya community.
