Kisii

Philip Mbego with his wife Sabina Moraa are from keomarwanga in Kisii. Tis portrait was painted in 1997. The couple were farmers and he was a community counsellor.
They live in the second most populous area in Kenya, which is amazingly green all year round.
Philips wife is clad in the Kisii traditional skin regalia with the traditional anklets. Her face has three lines cut below each eye in the traditional scarification style. The artist’s detail is outstanding. Her ears are pierced and there is an artificial gap in the lower jaw teeth, although these are not visible in the painting.
