Giriama

This painting of Mzee Kombe was completed in 1996 in Msabaha Malindi .
Mzee Kombe is a medicine man and elder of the community with numerous wives. His face has marks under his eyes in the traditional Giriama scarification style and his ears are pierced. He wears amulets made of wood and rhino horn with a necklace and earrings for men.
On his right side are Vigango; the totem poles that represent the dead in honour of their memory, a common site in the courtyards of the Mijikenda people of Kenya. The Giriama are a sub-community of the Mijikenda.
