Subaa

Painted in 1997 this Subaa couple Alfred Odero and his wife Margaret Aoko are from Rusinga Island located in Lake Victoria, South – west Kenya.

Alfred Odero is a fisherman and a subsistence farmer. The couple is clad in their traditional mourning costume. The Subaa adopted traditions from the luo although they were originally from Buganda in Uganda. In Kiganda folktales (Kiganda is the language of the Buganda people), the Subaas are referred to as Bakunta, meaning fugitives.
